Half a million more join Denmark’s e-Boks digital mail service

Danish digital mail service e-Boks is now being used by almost 3.5m Danes, more than 18% more than this time last year. The figures suggest nearly two thirds of the 5.5m population are now using the digital mail service.

The company joint-owned by Post Danmark and electronic payment specialist Nets said this week that Danes are really taking to the digital platform, which should translate into major savings for companies and institutions using the service to send communications.

The latest figures suggest that 187m documents were sent via e-Boks during 2011, 27m or 17% more than in 2010 when 3m Danes were using the service.

e-Boks, which has its head office in Ballerup, in the suburbs of Copenhagen, said the number of consumers using its digital mail service has doubled since 2008, and that currently around 40,000 new users are registering accounts each month.

“With this kind of progress, we see evidence that Danes are in no way afraid of digitisation,” said Henrik Andersen, the e-Boks managing director.

“On the contrary: we see the demand going up, and the number of users keen to see more of their companies using e-Boks is increasing.

“At the same time, we’re finding that the drive to go mobile is very pronounced, so you can be notified wherever you are,” said Andersen, adding that the new e-Boks smartphone application had been downloaded more than 160,000 times in its first month after launch.

Digital mail

e-Boks, which was founded in 2001, allows consumers to receive, sort and archive electronic documents including payslips, bank statements and pension records, with a secure e-mailbox that is associated with their social security numbers.

Consumers can select which companies can send them items to their e-Boks account, from municipal authorities to banks, utilities, insurance providers and telecommunications firms. But, the service is closed to unsolicited advertising materials.

One of the most popular digital mailings through the e-Boks system at the moment are payslips, the company said, with more than 2m sent out each month.

e-Boks claimed that the increase in volume of documents sent through its service, and the extra Danes using a digital mailbox, also had a beneficial impact on the environment, saving 3,135 tons of paper.
