PostNord and supplier work to restore IT network after data centre fire

Nordic postal operator PostNord has been battling to restore its IT operations – including parcel tracking capabilities – after a fire at its supplier on New Year’s Day. The parent company of Sweden Post and Post Danmark said today its focus remains on ensuring the problems can be tackled with the “least possible impact” on its customers and their business.

Some online services are now being restored, with communications links to PostNord’s 1,600 partner outlets in Sweden re-established at the weekend.

Most of the company’s mail and logistics services have now returned to normal functions, the company said, with track and trace systems for letters and parcels available from Friday (3rd January).

Delays to mail deliveries in Sweden should be handled during this week.

PostNord said today that its customers can now pick up items requiring extended ID checks, cash on delivery can now be collected and the company’s text message notification systems are now working once again.

Some individual services will have their functionality reduced “for some time”, the company warned today.

PostNord is still using temporary landing web pages for its main Sweden Post, Post Danmark and PostNord Logistics websites.

The company said in a statement that it is continuing to cooperate “intensively” with its IT supplier Evry “to ensure the quality of security solutions and thus enable the opening of national websites”.

The electrical fire at Stockholm-based Evry’s Tomteboda data centre on New Year’s Day also knocked out the IT systems for Sweden’s national rail provider SJ, crashing that company’s website and disrupting its ticket booking system.

Alcoholic beverage retailer Systembolaget and local transport websites in Stockholm have also been affected by the fire at Evry.

Evry said an explosive fire in the server room at its data centre was extinguished quickly, but nevertheless damaged key hardware components that had to be replaced. A reboot of the system following the power failure resulting from the fire did not go as intended, because of a bug in the software.

Niclas Ekblad, the head of Evry Sweden, said his company had its top experts on the case.

“On Evry’s behalf, I regret the inconvenience caused to our customers in connection with the fire in our data centre. I can assure you that Evry with our suppliers are working around the clock to resolve the disruption which arose in connection with the fire.”
