French unions plan strike action

Workers from La Poste could strike on 24 November in response to government reform plans. A wave a striking action may have come to an end for now in the UK, but postal deliveries in France could be hit by disruption as five unions plan a one-day strike

The unions are in protest at a new law that would turn the post office into a company with shareholders.

The government insists it is not planning to privatise La Poste and it would be the only shareholder in the société anonyme.

It says the change in La Poste’s status is needed for modernising, as it would allow extra sources of funding.

The EU requires it in preparation for the opening up of the European postal market in January 2011.
