CTT to deploy 75 electric vehicles

CTT-Correios de Portugal has marked out plans to introduce 75 electric vehicles for postal deliveries by 2013. The move forms a part of the operator’s sustainability and cost reduction policy.

The first electric vehicles to be introduced in the main Portuguese cities have autonomy of 100km and do not exceed 40km per hour, CTT confirmed.

Besides increasing the eco-friendly fleet, CTT is also optimising the use of the remaining 3,000 vehicles which still use fossil fuels, including the renewal a significant portion of its heavyweight vehicles and the purchase of more than 100 bicycles and electric scooters.

External energetic audits have also been undertaken to rationalise the company’s fuel consumption, and eco-driving training is being provided to the drivers of the company cars.

With these measures CTT managed to obtain a EUR 150,000 decrease in energetic costs, it confirmed.

Furthermore, its CO2 footprint has also been narrowed: from 15.7k tonnes in 2007 to 14.8k tonnes in 2010.

This represents a drop of 6% over the three-year period.
