Estonian Post launches digital registered mail service
Estonian Post has launched a new digital and hybrid mail service for its customers to send out registered letters directly from their computers. A new Electronic Mail Centre went live yesterday at kirjakeskus.post.ee, after a pilot period in which the service was tested out by nine companies.
Estonian Post is promoting the convenience of the service for its customers, who can use it to send registered mail including legal documents electronically.
The Post also pointed to the cost savings from the reduced time and transportation needed to send a registered letter from a post office.
Letters and documents can be signed digitally through the service, Estonian Post said, then retrieved by the correct recipient using a special ID number as a kind of delivery confirmation signature.
Recipients can then opt to receive the documents electronically, or have Estonian Post print them and mail them physically.
24-hour mailing
Toomas Türk, the head of Estonian Post’s infologistics division, explained: “Companies who are sending registered letters on a daily basis benefit from this solution significantly. Now they can send and receive registered letters around the clock without leaving their computer.
“Using the e-registered letter service instead of email guarantees that the documents are received and opened by the right person,” Türk added.
One of the first companies to use the service has been Tallinn-based law firm Rando Antsmäe LLC. Attorney Rando Antsmäe said he believed there was a future for such a service.
He said: “Increasingly more legal cases between people and businesses often require proof that a statement or other document has been sent out and received – or a recipient has refused to accept the document. Now all this can be done easily, quickly and – most importantly – in a more efficient business or from home, it can be done without leaving the home or office.
“All you need is a computer or smartphone with internet access,” added Antsmäe.
