DHL logistics brings music to Londoners
DHL has delivered 130 musical instruments to London’s Barbican as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra stages the UK leg of its world tour. The logistics giant has so far ferried 6,000 kilos of items on the German orchestra’s tour through 10 countries that has already included stops at venues in France, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Austria before the UK.
As well as instruments ranging from 500g triangles up to 133-kilo kettledrums, DHL has been responsible for shipping music stands, sheet music the conductor’s rostrum and even the musicians’ wardrobes.
DHL uses special air-suspended vehicles and temperature monitoring systems to transport the multi-million euro cargo that includes irreplaceable instruments.
Wolfgang Giehl, head of corporate brand marketing at Deutsche Post DHL, said it was “crucial” to have temperature-controlled transportation and to meet the tight schedules for the world tour to be a success.
He said: “The planning of a complete concert tour starts up to a year and a half before the opening show. Having worked with the Gewandhaus Orchestra for the last two years, we’re confident in our ability to deliver a great show.”
Following the London concert, the tour next moves on to Paris before returning to culminating in four locations within Germany.
Professor Andreas Schultz, director of the Gewandhaus, said: “As official logistics partner, DHL’s experience and know-how has always ensured a smooth tour.”
