Dutch trade union challenges PostNL over delivery workers’ freelance status

The Dutch trade union federation Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging has challenged PostNL either to take on its freelance delivery workers as full employees, or allow them to work for other delivery firms. At the moment, claims FNV, the freelance staff are technically self-employed, which means that they do not have all the benefits of formal employment, such as sick pay and holiday entitlements, but they are only allowed to work for PostNL. The union has written to PostNL, requesting a meeting before 7 May.

Local sources report that the majority of delivery workers have “freelance” status.
