Twitter extends online shopping options with product pages

Twitter has extended the possibilities for online purchasing on its social networking site with the test launch of “product and places on dedicated pages”. In statement posted on its blog on Friday (19 June) Twitter said: “These pages will feature images and video about the product alongside information such as a description, price, and an option to buy, book, or visit the website for more information.”

Users will not be able to buy all the highlighted products directly through Twitter; some will have links to other websites where a purchase or download can be made. Retailers participating in the tests can choose if they want to sell on Twitter or redirect people to a separate website. Some will probably experiment with both methods to see which generates more sales.

As previously reported, Twitter has already been testing a Buy button on its website for a select group of US-based users since September last year.

With CEO Dick Costolo leaving the company at the end of the money and investors becoming twitchy, Twitter is under pressure to start generating revenues to go alongside its widespread usage.
