Locpin launch
UK-based Locpin has launched its new location coding system. According to the company, its technology allows “any address, anywhere”, to be pinpointed with a unique code of 6 letters and numbers (called a “locpin”), and then automatically records its GPS co-ordinates.
The Locpin website invites people to create their own locpins for their addresses, claiming “anyone, anywhere can create a locpin for free”.
The company’s pitch continues: “Create locpins for your home, office or anywhere else and you will never need to repeat or write down the directions again – just give them your locpin.
“Whether you have an address that is easy or difficult to find – think deliveries, taxis or friends – then Locpin is for you.”
Speaking to the high-tech press, Locpin co-founder Guy Davenport said that the company’s focus was on creating something that would be easy to set up and ensure accurate delivery-point data. He said that Locpin uses Google Maps APIs to capture longitudinal and latitudinal data to be accurate within 10sqm of a location.
“For consumers Locpins will be free and, if you move house, you can just update your address online,” he added.
“For businesses we have built an API that they can use to find customers and that’s what we will charge for. We have a rate card based on usage within our software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform.”
Davenport speculated that the Locpin would be well-placed to work with delivery firms using drones and other innovative technologies.
“As this market develops there will be lots of changes and new players. Expectations will also change and people will be expecting same-day e-commerce deliveries or even sooner,” he enthused. “This is absolutely something we are positioned to be ready for.”
Locpin’s backers include Clive Beharrell, the former chairman of Fat Face who specialises in investing in and nurturing SMEs.
