Norwegians set to liberalise postal services earlier than the EU

Norway could open the market for full competition for all postal service earlier than the European Union demands, according to the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority.

The EU has planned a gradually freer market between 2003 and 2009 but the Norwegian authority has made a proposal to liberalise the services faster than that.

The Norwegian Post currently has monopoly on sealed letters lighter than 350 grammes, which make up about NOK5bn of its income. The aim is to have free competition from 2006, reported NTB, a Norwegian news service.
