UPS doubles throughput at Nuremberg hub, with help from SPPAL technology

UPS has doubled its throughput at its Nuremberg hub to 30,000 parcels an hour, using technology from Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL). The sorting process, which was previously done using a conventional conveying system, is now achieved with an automatic system with five Visicon singulators, eight sorters and a total of 87 terminal stations.

“Our priority was to ensure that the UPS could carry on operations as usual while new equipment was being installed,” said Michael Reichle, CEO of SPPAL.

The upgrade took place alongside running operations, which was the same approach that was used at UPS Air Hub Cologne. Key project personnel was shifted from Cologne to Nuremberg to maximize project know-how and ensure success.
