Bezos: Amazon delivering more of its own parcels in UK
Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos told delegates at the Recode conference that the internet giant has been handling more home deliveries in the UK because Royal Mail does not have sufficient capacity at the peak periods. Speaking at the conference in Rancho Palo Verdes, California last week, Bezos said that Amazon is now handling around half of its own deliveries in the UK.
“We have to have capacity for peak delivery times,” Bezos was quoted as saying. “We have had to take over a lot of the last mile delivery in the UK over the last several years. The Royal Mail ran out of capacity at peak.”
Picking up on the Amazon chief executive’s comments, the UK-based Telegraph newspaper invited Royal Mail to comment – and the postal operator rejected the suggestion that it was unable to cope, emphasising that it delivered a record number of parcels last December and has the capacity to accommodate additional volumes.
