John Allen appointed CEO New Zealand Post

John Allen, currently Acting Chief Executive of New Zealand Post, has been appointed Chief Executive, Chairman Rt Hon Jim Bolger announced today.

Mr Bolger said the appointment completed a four-month long international search that attracted over 90 applications.

“The strong field of quality candidates is a reflection of the high regard with which New Zealand Post is held around the world.

“A shortlist of five candidates from New Zealand and overseas was interviewed by a Board sub-committee. Their recommendation to appoint Mr Allen received unanimous support from a meeting of the full New Zealand Post Board today in Wellington.

“Mr Allen was, quite simply, the best candidate. His track record with New Zealand Post has been impressive and he has successfully grown the profitability of New Zealand Post’s core business as Chief Executive of the Letters & Enterprises Group.

“John has a tremendous ability to inspire those around him. The Board and I look forward to working with him as he leads New Zealand Post as the new Chief Executive.”

Mr Allen joined New Zealand Post in 1994 as General Manager Business Planning on secondment from Rudd Watts & Stone. In 1997 he was appointed Group Leader Letters, and since October 2001 has led the Letters & Enterprises Group, responsible for approximately 50 per cent of New Zealand Post’s $966 million revenue in 2002.

Mr Allen was a partner in Rudd Watts & Stone from 1989 to 1996 after joining the law firm in 1984.

Mr Bolger said he knew that the staff, management and Shareholding Ministers would warmly welcome the appointment of Mr Allen to the role of Chief Executive.
