MCA Becomes Maltapost Regulator on June 1st
The Malta Communications Authority is set to become the regulator for the postal sector. Legal Notice 124 of 2003, published in the Government Gazette, will bring into force all the provisions of the amended Post Office Act with effect from 1 June 2003. A discussion paper on the introduction of a new regulatory regime for the postal sector, issued on Monday by the MCA, has been welcomed by Maltapost. Maltapost chief executive officer, Robert Lake pointed out that the amended postal legislation would become effective on 1 June, and key implications have been identified and projects established to ensure compliance. ‘We were told that a discussion paper would be issued, and we welcome the Authority’s approach. We are well placed to advance any key issues through our involvement in PostEurop,’ said Mr Lake told the Malta Business Weekly. He said that Maltapost is now looking forward to working with the new regulatory body, to ensure that during the liberalisation of this sector the postal service will continue to be strengthened and enhanced, while retaining its competitive edge. Mr Lake added that the already announced operational reforms which are to be implemented, mainly the centralisation of sorting and the re-organisation of delivery into hubs and new beats, would ensure more efficiency and productivity leading to the viability of the postal service in the future.
