Slovak Post office to be transformed into joint-stock company
State-run Slovenska posta, the monopoly provider of postal services in Slovakia, will be transformed into a joint-stock company at the beginning of May, and the state will be the sole owner, according to a bill approved by the Slovak cabinet.
The new legislation still has to be okayed by Parliament and signed by the President.
The joint-stock company will be the legal successor of the state-owned Slovenska posta and the bill will allow it to continue its business activities, in particular the provision of postal services, according to the government’s document.
The date of Slovenska posta transformation is the same as the date when Slovakia will join the EU. Full liberalisation of the postal market in Slovakia is expected in the years 2006 and 2007.
Slovenska posta emerged in 1993 and with over 17,000 employees it ranks among the largest employers in Slovakia. Pre- tax profit for last year is expected to be Sk51m lower than in 2002, at Sk175m. Revenues are planned at Sk6.64bn.
The company provides its services through 1,618 post offices, 92 postal centres and several partner posts run by individuals.
