Spanish post office fined for lack of Catalan documents

Correos, the Spanish post office, has been fined 30,000 euros by the government of the autonomous region of Catalonia for failing to provide Catalan-language versions of signs and documents in a number of its facilities in the autonomous region. The company said that it may appeal the decision, and commented that the breaches of legislation only applied to 20 or so of its 800 sites in Catalonia, or barely 2.5 per cent of its operation in the region.

The fine refers to 1998 legislation requiring companies to feature applicable regional languages in their paperwork and signposting. Eight other companies have been fined in Catalonia for less serious infractions since the legislation was passed, paying total fines of 13,216 euros.
