Asendia announces 100% carbon neutrality
Asendia has announced that it will be offsetting 100% of its carbon emissions, including first mile collection and last-mile delivery.
The emissions will be offset mostly by funding renewable energy production, such as windfarms.
In a statement issued this week, Asendia, which is a joint venture between La Poste and Swiss Post, said that it has focused on sustainability since its foundation in 2012 and has spent the last three years extending its sustainability strategy in response to growing concerns about the environmental impact of supply chain operations.
In 2020, Asendia offset emissions on international transport within Europe and from Europe to other continents. The total offset was 50,990 tCO2e which supported an EcoAct verified wind farm project in India3. In 2021, Asendia announced that it would now offset emissions on international transport worldwide.
As of this year, not only will Asendia offset all international transport emissions, but it will also include first mile collection, last mile delivery, returns, building emissions, machinery, and business travel.
Offsetting from 2021 and 2022 will support another EcoAct verified wind farm project, this time in China where coal still covers nearly 70% of the country’s energy needs.
Asendia has also made a commitment to sustainability on their board, with its Chief HR Officer Barbara Schielke adding Corporate Social Responsibility to her position.
Commenting on her expanded role and the company’s carbon neutrality announcement, Schielke said: “Our world is becoming more connected than ever, and international delivery is a big part of that connection. As one of the largest global logistic providers, we at Asendia know that protecting our planet comes first. From January 2022, we are taking a big step forward by off-setting 100% of all carbon emissions. We are excited to lead the way in our industry and will continue to find sustainable solutions for our clients in the future.”
Marc Pontet, CEO at Asendia, added: “Our sustainable commitment continues in the footsteps of our founding companies – La Poste and Swiss Post. Asendia is proudly following our heritage with sustainability as our core focus. Creating a dedicated role within the board was a natural step to our ongoing commitment.”
