Italy post office in partnership talks with French, Swiss post offices

Section: COMPANY NEWS MILAN (AFX) – Post office Poste Italiane SpA chief executive Corrado Passera
said the company is in partnership talks with the French and Swiss post offices. In an interview with the daily Il Corriere della Sera, Passera said he
expects to close “one or two” partnership deals for the distribution of mail and
parcels with European post offices in the first half of the year. He added that talks with the French and Swiss post offices are the most
advanced. However, Poste Italiane is also holding talks with other possible partners,
he said. Passera said the post office has more than 0.5 mln clients for its banking
service and expects to increase than number to more than 1.0 mln this year. He added that the company has set up Europa Gestioni Immobiliari, whose task
is to sell 1 trln lire in property assets by end-2002. The post office is expected to lose about 800 bln lire in 2000 and aims at
halving the loss in 2001, he said. pw/jsa
