UPS eyeing more buys

United Parcel Service remains interested in making acquisitions to
expand its menu of services, said Kurt Kuehn, vice president of investor
relations for the express and logistics provider. Kuehn said UPS is looking
for opportunities in supply chain management, the financial area and
technology. “Times are tough but that’s good for people who have cash. There
are opportunities around the world,” he told the JP Morgan Logistics
Conference Thursday. Kuehn noted that UPS has made 20 acquisitions in the past year. Most of the
have been very, very small but some – notably its takeover of Fritz Cos. –
have greatly expanded UPS’s capabilities in freight forwarding and customs
brokerage.
UPS is working very aggressively to improve Fritz’ information technology
platform. “We like what they’re doing. We just think they need a little more
oomph,” he said. JOURNAL OF COMMERCE, 06th September 2001
