Rolling strike action at Belgian Post Office
Unions representing staff at the Belgian post office have called for rolling strikes in the country’s three main regions. The strikes are scheduled to take place on November 30 in Flanders and on November 26 in Brussels. The Walloon unions have not yet made a decision, but the whole country may be affected on November 30.
The unions have been angered over the proposed closure of 400 unprofitable post office branches by 2005 as part of a large-scale restructuring plan. They say the measures were not announced as part of the group’s strategic plan, which was signed at the end of last year. Frans Rombouts, the group’s managing director, says no changes have been made to the plan and that the sharp decline in the volume of mail means that the group has a real problem in terms of use of its networks.
