Royal Mail offers public choice of collection points

Royal Mail is to offer consumers the opportunity to collect their mail from railway stations and post offices as part of a radical overhaul of the way post is delivered in the UK.

Under plans being developed by Royal Mail’s Business and Consumer Markets managing director Gillian Wilmot, customers will be able to decide where they want their mail delivered. The project is aimed at making the business more customer-focused.

Wilmot has appointed Steve Hannam from within Royal Mail to become project director for delivery specification. Hannam will oversee the development of the plans with a view to launching a range of products early next year.

The initiative comes as Royal Mail faces unprecedented competition within the postal market. Postal industry regulator Postcomm recently awarded a year-long licence to Hays DX to deliver mail to business addresses in specified postal districts.

It is likely that consumers will be able to choose the company that delivers their daily post as the market becomes liberalised.
