Tighter security rules could disrupt Singles Day
In the wake of the recent “parcel bomb” incidents, Chinese authorities have tightened up security requirements for parcel deliveries, and there are concerns that this could disrupt the annual “Singles Day” online shopping holiday. “Singles Day” – when online retailers like Alibaba will be offering special deals – falls on 11 November this year. This gives logistics companies, and the authorities themselves, less than three weeks to take the new security requirements on board before they have to cater for a massive surge in parcel volumes.
The key security requirements are:
- Package senders must register with their real identities
- Delivery companies must inspect parcels before packaging and delivering them
- Delivery services must inspect all parcels and envelopes via x-ray.
