Q-Posts records 20% rise in revenue
Qatar’s General Postal Corporation (Q-Posts) recorded an increase of about 20% in the revenues generated by its Express Mail Service-Mumtaz Post during the nine months of the year 2002 while Q-Posts income itself rose by some 10%, the Q-Posts chairman, Ali Mohammad Al Ali, said here yesterday.
Ali was speaking to Q-Posts employees at a ceremony held at the Doha Club yesterday, to honour them for their outstanding services rendered to the corporation. In his speech, the chairman revealed that the expenses of Q-Posts also rose last year by nearly 33%. He attributed this increase to the various upgrades and refurbishment conducted by the corporation such as launch of its website on the Internet, staff training, new uniforms for employees, procuring computers and a fleet of new postal vehicles.
Q-Posts also honoured the local media yesterday for their coverage of activities of the corporation. The Peninsula and its sister publication in Arabic, the Al Sharq, were also honoured at the ceremony.
In his speech, Ali pointed out that due to the superior quality of postage stamps issued by Q-Posts, the sale of such stamps had increased last year by some 84% while the Philatelic Club of the corporation witnessed an increase in its membership to 645 members as compared to 575 in 2001. The number of incoming and outbound mail items from Qatar also rose manifold since more people are now confident of using the country’s postal system due to the latest advances, he noted.
Ali revealed that as part of community service, Q-Posts plans to offer a facility by which residents of the country can renew their health cards from the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) using the postal system. Q-Posts is also studying a joint venture agreement with a foreign firm for its EMS Mumtaz Mail service, he added. In addition, the corporation intends to issue a special album that contains postage stamps issued by Qatar from 1957 till date. The postal network of Qatar will also be linked by computers to that of UAE and later to those of other GCC states, he added.
Ali and his deputy, Abdulaziz bin Mohammad Al Khater, later honoured the chief of EMS-Mumtaz Post, Jassim Al Fahlia, with a special plaque for the record growth achieved by his department. Heads of department who had given outstanding services to the corporation, ideal women employees, those who had given valuable services, staff who had successfully completed special training courses and post offices and departments who had performed exceptionally well during the year 2002, were also honoured.
