Direct Mail 'can grow'

There is room for expansion in the direct mail market despite small and medium-sized businesses using the post less, according to the Royal Mail.
Speaking at a marketing and sales event in Bristol sponsored by the Royal Mail’s parent company Consignia, spokesman Richard Smith said people who dismissed the post as “snail mail” were out of touch.

Anger over GBP1.25 fee to get cash at Post Offices

CASH machines are to be installed in rural post offices in an attempt to revive their fortunes. A fee of pounds 1.25 will be charged for every withdrawal, a measure that immediately drew criticism from countryside pressure groups. Some sub postmasters and postmistresses said the free-standing machines posed too much of a security risk and they would be rejecting them. The American-owned firm Hanco ATM Systems has signed a deal with Consignia, the Post Office holding company, to install an initial 3,000 machines.

Snail mail still tops in The Philippines

Despite the advent of modern technology and the proliferation of private letter couriers, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PPC) still controls up to 90% of the mail delivery business.
Frendy Gerona, PPC Southern Mindanao information officer, said there is no substitute to public courier service, since it covers the widest reach. “We can even deliver in the middle of Mt. Apo if there’s a community there,” he said, adding that some private courier services are still relying on the PPC in delivering the mails and packages of their clients to hinterland communities.

The Birmingham-based company is poised to challenge Royal Mail’s postal monopoly, collecting and sorting business post, and is looking to add value to its stamps.

French transport group Geodis is consolidating its UK interests under the Geodis UK banner.
A new solutions department geared to serve large logistics partners will also be created, mirroring the structure and working closely with the company’s global logistics operation in France.
“We are establishing a Geodis brand in the UK so we can benefit from the pan-European strength of Geodis, ” said marketing and sales director Robin Parr-Davies.

Parcel business flourishing in remote areas

Abenefit of the many tentacles Deutsche Post has in the freight forwarding and parcels market was that Securicor Omega Express was able to take over the lease at a former Danzas facility close to Dublin airport last year when the Irish operations of Danzas, AEI and ASG were consolidated.
Although there is no direct trading relationship, general manager Garrett Thornton says that thanks to a group Internet tool, “we are aware of what’s happening elsewhere in the group”.
