Japanese Postal Service takeover

The Kyodo News Service has reported that “a [Japanese] posts ministry study panel on Friday issued a draft proposal for a new public corporation slated to take over state-run postal services in 2003 in which it called on the new entity to adopt a performance-based salary system. The panel of the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications also proposes that the new corporation, which will still be affiliated with the government, adopt a system of outside directors. The new corporation will be in charge of mail, postal savings and insurance operations. Employees of the new corporation will also be considered public workers, but their salaries should be determined by job performance and not simply by the government pay structure.”

Serbia: Postal service workers join Telekom Serbia strike

Belgrade, 24 September: The Telekom Serbia workers who have been
on strike for seven days now have been joined today by PTT
Serbia [Serbian postal service] workers, Beta was told by Zoran
Mrvaljevic, chairman of Telekom Serbia’s trade union. He said that the strike had begun in all post offices, and added
that during the strike the minimum work process would be
observed.

India: Reciprocal services between post & telecom cease

Come
October 1, and the arrangement for free services on reciprocal basis
between the Department of Posts and the Department of Telecom, nay
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), shall cease to exist. From then on, BSNL will have to pay the Department of Posts for all
services – such as collection of telephone bills, service money
orders, occupying space, etc – availed through the latter’s network
and infrastructure.

Philpost plans to privatise

THE PHILIPPINE Postal Corp. has disclosed plans to privatize certain
aspects of its operations so it could compete more efficiently with
its private sector counterparts. Postmaster General Nicasio Rodriguez Jr. said in an interview that
most private courier service providers could deliver mails and
cargoes faster than the state-owned mail carrier because of several
factors.
