Japan bankers oppose plan to allow Post Offices sell investment trusts
Nine banking industry groups, including those for both major banks and smaller savings institutions, issued a joint statement Monday, voicing opposition to the government’s plan to let post offices sell investment trusts.

Postal bosses have defended a decision to axe nightly mail trains passing through Exeter to London Paddington after more than a century of operation.
The Royal Mail has been running its 50 ‘travelling post offices’ on Britain’s rail network, including the Great Western main line, since the mid-19th Century. But it now says trains are no longer economic or reliable.
Ending the service could cost around 70 jobs at sorting offices and rail freight depots in Plymouth and Cornwall.

This is the eighth USPS facility to acquire the Wireless Asset Net system. The order for the Buffalo P&DC is valued at approximately $250,000, and system deployment is expected to occur this year.

East Antrim MP Roy Beggs has called on the Government to ensure that new provisions for pension payments will not lead to the demise of the village post office.
Addressing Post Office Minister Stephen Timms in the Commons, Mr Beggs referred to the decision to phase out pension books and replace them with direct payment options through bank or post office accounts.

AN Post has demanded an urgent 110 per cent rise in some postal charges to cover its huge losses. A recovery plan, including reconstructing costs of EUR50million, meant losses of EUR70million have already been predicted for 2002. A letter in a leaked dossier, written by An Post chief executive John Hynes, warns of a “significant trading loss” of EUR9million in post services. An Post hopes to raise the cost of sending registered mail by 34 per cent and the cost of posting small packages by 110 per cent. An Post has now written to communications regulator Etain Doyle asking for price increases to be approved without delay.

Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail, yesterday attacked the Government over its handling of the rolling out of the “universal bank” which is intended to reduce the number of people without a bank account and also boost the finances of the Post Office.
Mr Leighton put the blame at the door of the Government for delays in advertising the new “bank” and also for the complicated process customers have to follow if they want to take out one of its new accounts through the Post Office.
