UK Royal Mail Chairman Leighton calls for curbs on Postcomm
Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail, is on Wednesday expected to spell out a series of radical reforms to Britain’s regulators. In what will be interpreted as a sideswipe at Graham Corbett, the postal regulator, Mr Leighton will tell a House of Lords select committee that the Government needs to keep a tighter rein on the regulators.

The management of Deutsche Post, Germany’s postal service operator, has confirmed that it is examining whether to acquire Norisbank, the Nuremberg-based subsidiary of HypoVereinsbank, Germany’s second largest bank. The profitable retail loan specialist is up for sale. Postbank, Deutsche Post’s banking subsidiary, is currently the only potential German buyer of Norisbank, which operates roughly 100 retail branches and has approximately 500,000 customers.

Customer Demand Leads to Expansion of International Service
Nightspeed is to expand its international road based delivery service to encompass twelve more countries in response to customer needs. Nightspeed, an independently owned express parcel distribution delivery network with headquarters in Tipton and focused on secure parcel delivery has extended World Connect Europe, the two to five day road based delivery service to now include Norway, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, totalling twenty six countries in all.

Deutsche Post, the German national postal service operator, saw turnover up by 0.7 per cent to 9.77bn euros, and ebita up by 5 per cent to 951m euros, for the first quarter of 2003. Business for April is also reported to have shown a continuation of the favourable development reported for the first three months. Management has confirmed the annual target for ebita of at least 2.8bn euros, compared with 3bn euros for 2002. In view of the company’s obligation to reduce postage charges and the weak economy, this fairly stable development forecast has been viewed positively by analysts.

TNT, the express courier and logistics company owned by Dutch postal group TPG, is considering the possibility of using its own freighter aircraft on some regional and transcontinental services following the Sars outbreak. Deputy country manager Ambrose Linn said the firm’s ability to service its express customers had been hurt by airlines’ decisions to cut flights as passenger numbers plummeted because of Sars.

Royal Mail today revealed its plans to have a more efficient and flexible UK-wide distribution network, integrating air and road, in place by the end of the financial year. Original plans to include rail in the new network have now been dropped after Royal Mail failed to reach agreement with its rail freight supplier because the cost was too high. As part of a complete review of its road, rail and air network, Royal Mail announced last year that it intended to stop using rail for the distribution of First Class mail due to poor reliability, but would continue using rail for less time critical items. However, following the failure of protracted negotiations with rail freight supplier EWS over the transfer of existing services to the new network, Royal Mail has concluded that it has no alternative but to move forward with a restructure based on a road and air network only.
