Will print feel the pinch from Williams Lea deal?

How we think print fits into the business landscape has just shifted dramatically following Deutsche Post’s bid for Williams Lea. The global mail and logistics firm, which operates DHL Global Mail in the UK, has described Williams Lea as a provider of “value-added document and mail-related services”. As so much print ends up in the post for whatever application, be it direct mail, bills, statements or all manner of other business and consumer communication, it seems to be a perfect match. If the parent company can gain all Williams Lea’s fulfilment – the logistics and postage – then the deal could prove to be a cash cow, but that’s only part of it. InfoTrends CAP Ventures has claimed that of every GBP6 spent on a document only GBP1 is on print production, the rest comes before and after in document management, design, fulfilment and logistics.

Deutsche Post, has just carried out a pincer movement on print. It has a strong position in fulfilment and has bought one of the pre-eminent players in print and document management.

DHL owner seeks big stake in Williams Lea

Deutsche Post said Monday it will pay about USD443 million for a 75 percent stake in Britain’s Williams Lea Group Ltd. with an eye toward acquiring it completely. The company said Williams Lea should bolster its own document management and logistics business. Under the terms of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, Williams Lea will operate independently of Deutsche Post and keep its board of directors. “We have been very impressed with Williams Lea and its management team. They have demonstrated an impeccable track record for delivering growth, integrating acquisitions and delivering a best-in-class service to clients,” said Hans-Dieter Petram, a member of Deutsche Post’s board. He added that that the company would help augment its DHL Global Mail. “We see considerable potential to leverage our world class mail and logistics capability in adding more value to Williams Leas customer proposition,” Petram said. Currently, 38 percent of Williams Lea is owned by the venture capital firm 3i Group.

UK Royal Mail's rivals deliver new blows

The BBC, banking giants HSBC and HBOS and mobile phone groups O2 and Orange are set to give the Royal Mail the sack – the latest major companies to quit the state-owned postal operator over cost and service levels. The defections are likely to see more than two billion letters handled this year by private postal operators in contracts worth upwards of pounds 300 million. The BBC and O2 are close to taking their business to UK Mail, the postal arm of troubled quoted courier group Business Post. It is understood UK Mail is also vying with main rival TNT to win lucrative work for HSBC, Halifax group HBOS and Orange. UK Mail, TNT and the DHL arm of German giant Deutsche Post are aggressively targeting major corporates to take bulk postal contracts away from Royal Mail.

UK Postal Services: Postal players deliver

Now that the postal system is in full deregulation, what services are on offer for UK businesses? asks Rob McLuhan. After 350 years Royal Mail has finally lost its stranglehold over the postal market, and judging from the number of firms that have applied for licences, it would seem that operators in the field have been waiting for this moment. In January the postal service became fully deregulated, ending Royal Mail’s monopoly and offering choice to businesses and consumers for the first time. This follows a partial deregulation in 2003 that permitted private operators to deliver business mail in batches of 4,000 or more. The long overdue change is already cutting costs and raising the quality of a service seen by many as indifferent. With savings on offer of about five per cent, and more in some cases, many bulk mailers have jumped at the chance to slash their postal bills for at least part of their needs.
