Key Statistics on French Direct Marketing Market

The French Union of Direct Marketing recently released the 2005 edition of its annual study analyzing the trends in direct marketing. Conducted since 1990 the report reveals there was a 4.5% increase from the previous year in total direct marketing expenditure. In 2004 direct marketing expenditure was 11 billion Euros, representing 35% of the total advertising market. Addressed mail represented 35% of the direct market expenditure, unaddressed mail 25% and catalogues 3%.

KarstadtQuelle sells stake in Europapier to Bertelsmann

KarstadtQuelle AG sold its stake in paper wholesaler Europapier AG to Bertelsmann AG unit Arvato at the end of last month, a spokesman for the German retailer told dpa-AFX news agency. He declined to comment on financial details.
The next project on the agenda is the sale of the MDAX-listed company’s logistics operations, he said, adding there are ongoing talks with Deutsche Post
World Net AG’s unit DHL.

EU to rule on Bertelsmann, Axel Springer JV on Dec 23

The European Commission said it will rule on the proposed joint venture between Axel Springer AG and Bertelsmann AG’s high-quality printing operations on Dec 23. Last week, the German cartel office told the commission that it wanted to rule on the deal, meaning the commission’s investigation was delayed by two weeks while it assessed the merits of the request. Sources told AFX News at the time that the commission was likely to turn down the request because of the implications for the European market as a whole.
