‘Mature’ French market belies trade growth

France has emerged from its economic lull, according to the government, which has upped the 2004 GDP growth forecast to 2.3%. But business leaders are finding it hard to square the country’s new position in the front rank of EU economies with their still struggling bottom lines. “The finance minister talks about 2% growth, ” says Geraud de Chantérac, VP of GeoPost’s French arm, Chronopost France. “We’ve talked to all our competitors and we don’t know where that figure comes from.” Express operators facing little vitality in the domestic market are targeting international services for growth. “The domestic market is very mature, ” says Eric Jacquemet, MD of TNT France. “But the international market is growing by more than 5% a year and we are growing at an even faster rate.” TNT is the third largest operator in France’s international express market, just below Chronopost’s 18.5%. DHL is the clear market leader, with 36% of the market.

Geopost Expands the DPD Network to Slovenia

GeoPost continues the step-by-step expansion of the international DPD Parcel & Express network. As of today, Slovenia, represented by new franchise partner kurirska in paketna distribucija, has joined the permanent network, thereby extending the DPD network across the Balkans and into the new EU countries.

The keystone of this expansion is a joint venture with Austrian franchise partner Lagermax. Geopost will hold a 70% stake in the enterprise with the other 30% being held by Lagermax. This renewed cooperation, which has previously led to successful joint ventures in Hungary and Croatia, will enable DPD’s main shareholder GeoPost to further expand its international network within Central and Eastern Europe. Thanks to its Austrian-based network, Lagermax has traditionally had close ties with the Balkan states and respectively has the advantage of an existing infrastructure in South-East Europe.

Geopost uses unusual tactics to encourage managers to work together

An invitation to attend the annual summer meeting of Geopost, a France-based transport and logistics company, was sent to the top 40 executives along with some mischievous advice: bring an extra-warm sweater.

Claude Begle, Geopost’s chief executive, had already begun to spread rumours that Copenhagen was not the real location. He had even encouraged loose talk of bear-hunting in Siberia.

But no one suspected the truth: that the 40 managers would soon find themselves aboard a small boat in the Arctic Circle, in almost perpetual daylight, and with no means of contacting the outside world apart from the ship’s radio.
