Royal Mail goes hands-on (UK)

Royal Mail is finalising contracts with a range of suppliers for the provision of handheld devices to track letter and parcel information.

By the end of this summer, more than 25,000 staff handling items tracked by special and recorded delivery will use the devices, which are intended to speed up and modernise postal processes.

The devices will enable Royal Mail van drivers to capture signatures at the point of delivery. The data will then be transmitted over a wireless network, allowing customers to check via the web whether or not items have arrived at their destination.

Royal Mail is in the final stages of making contractual adjustments with the pool of partners chosen to carry out the project.

While contracts await final sign-off, suppliers are understood to include hardware specialist Intermec and systems integrator CSC.

Training will be done in-house and will begin in the weeks prior to the implementation.

Some 70,000 staff who deliver items by foot or bicycle will continue using a paper-based system to record signatures and delivery times, but the devices will roll out to all postal delivery workers in the future.

Trials for the handheld computers began late last year.

The project is the first stage of Royal Mail’s GBP 1.2bn IT-based infrastructure upgrade and will underpin a series of customer-focused initiatives.

Hand-held mobile scanning for Courier Express at SingPost

With the advent of wireless communications and internet, SingPost had to face expectations for faster and better service from its customers for express parcels.

Manual tracking of express parcels, with reduced accuracy and efficiency, more human resource involvement, and paper wastage, seemed so outdated.

SingPost which provides efficient and high quality domestic and international postal services in Singapore, recognized the problem. It became determined to meet and exceed the rising customer expectations. To do this, it had to do away with its existing system (in operation until 2004) whereby the old barcode readers were outmoded and the Internet service provider providing the public wireless network was decommissioned.

SingPost consulted with its information technology partner NCS Private Limited, over a period of six months, to define the project specifications and mapped out the entire process of the project.

Bring it up to the speed

After a series of stringent equipment definitions, preliminary research and testing, the task force identified that the Intermec 760 handheld mobiles were ideal for the barcode scanning function for its Speedpost operations, based on product reliability, customer service and technical support.

These devices were manufactured by Intermec, Inc., a firm which develops, manufactures and integrates technologies that identify, track and manage supply chain assets

The Intermec handheld mobiles were subjected to drop tests, splash tests, battery power consumption when using GPRS (general packet radio service) connections and field barcode scanning reliability.

UTi Sun Couriers Streamlines Operations and Real Time Delivery Confirmation

Fast, reliable service is important to most any business, but in the courier industry it’s do or die. Just one hour’s delay can leave a significant negative impression on customers waiting for that all-important letter or package.

UTi Sun Couriers, a division of UTi Worldwide, is Southern Africa’s largest courier company, specializing in moving express freight to and from any address in South Africa or overseas. With branches throughout the country, UTi Sun has built its business on timely and reliable deliveries.

To further enhance customer service, the courier decided it was time to replace an antiquated radio trucking system and approximately 800 outdated handheld computers. In its place, UTi Sun needed a technologically advanced parcel tracking system with the ability to confirm deliveries in real-time.

Equipping Mobility: Intermec, ProScan and MTN
UTi Sun Couriers management tapped Intermec partner ProScan Systems to design, equip and implement the new system. ProScan is a leader in barcoding, RFID, data collection, wireless networking, and mobile technologies, and is the sole distributor for Intermec products in South Africa.
The integrator – along with Intermec and MTN, Africa’s largest cellular network – delivered the first phase in one of the largest and most advanced combined WLAN and GPRS mobile communication and data collection systems in the country. The system features Intermec 761 handheld computers.
