Maltapost launches new courier service

A new International mail and parcel service offering speed and security has just been launched in Malta and Gozo by Maltapost plc. Aptly titled Maltapost Express International, this new service offers delivery to key worldwide destinations in the shortest possible time.

Speaking at a media launch to which members of the business community were also invited, Maltapost CEO Stephen Sultana said the new service offers global coverage to over 200 countries around the world. Mr Sultana also emphasised the security element of the new service.

Maltapost Express International also incorporates proof of delivery, and the service provides for compensation in instances of loss or damage, with the option to the client of purchasing additional insurance in instances where this is felt necessary.

Consultation paper on postal services standards

The Malta Communications Authority, as the independent regulator of the postal sector in Malta, yesterday published a consultation paper on the quality of service standards to be met by Maltapost plc. Joseph Tabone, MCA chairman, said: “Efficient and cost effective postal services are an essential element of the infrastructure needed by businesses and individuals alike. The quality of service targets set for Maltapost must reflect what customers want and what Maltapost can achieve by focusing its efforts on meeting the ever rising customer requirements”. The consultation process will specifically target the standards to be met by Maltapost as the designated universal service provider.

MCA Becomes Maltapost Regulator on June 1st

The Malta Communications Authority is set to become the regulator for the postal sector. Legal Notice 124 of 2003, published in the Government Gazette, will bring into force all the provisions of the amended Post Office Act with effect from 1 June 2003. A discussion paper on the introduction of a new regulatory regime for the postal sector, issued on Monday by the MCA, has been welcomed by Maltapost. Maltapost chief executive officer, Robert Lake pointed out that the amended postal legislation would become effective on 1 June, and key implications have been identified and projects established to ensure compliance.

Maltapost sets up international mail hub

Maltapost has recently set up an international mail hub in Malta for mail transiting to a number of regional Mediterranean countries. The newly set up hub will help to generate business opportunities and new areas of revenue for Maltapost. The agreement to set up the international mail hub was recently signed between GATS (Global Air Transport Systems) UK and Maltapost.

Yet Another Resignation At Maltapost

Yet another hiccup at Maltapost following the partial privatisation and takeover of management by New Zealand’s Transend, with the expatriate occupying the second most senior management post tendering his resignation.

Maltapost’s general manager (postal services), Pat Burke, has tendered his resignation. The Maltapost board of directors is believed to have accepted Mr Burke’s resignation. Maltapost said that Mr Burke relinquished his post for personal reasons.
