Sweden’s Posten AB heading for a serious financial crisis

The new CEO of Sweden’s Posten AB, Mr Börge Österholm, believes that his company is heading for a serious financial crisis. ‘We haven’t got to the crisis stage yet, but unless we do something, we will’, one of Sweden’s leading papers, ‚Svenska Dagbladet’ (4.2) quotes Mr Österholm. The paper further reports that the post would have to cope with considerable losses, and unless this trend was broken the company would find itself bankrupt within the next two years.

Swedish Posten Interim results January-June 2002

–Operating earnings for the six months ended June 30, 2002 were Skr 570 m (-253). The earnings improvement is attributable to the reversal of provisions previously made for future losses in the cashier network of Skr 916 m.
–The rollout of the new service network is proceeding according to plan. 55 of Posten’s 91 local areas have implemented the new service network.
–The Swedish Parliament has increased subsidies for cashier service to Skr 400 m. The EU Commission found the government subsidies in compliance with EU regulations, facilitating the reversal of Skr 916 m in provisions.
–The alliance with La Poste/DPD is proceeding according to plan. La Poste has become a 50% partner in Posten’s Polish subsidiary, Masterlink, which, in turn, has acquired the franchise rights to DPD (Direct Parcel Distribution) in Poland for the coming 15 years. Posten has also acquired the franchise rights to DPD in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for the coming five years.

Municipalities Give 'Thumbs-Up' to ePostboxen

Many of Sweden’s local governments have given the thumbs-up to Posten’s electronic infrastructure — ePostboxen. Residents will now have the choice of receiving bills and bulk mailings from municipalities either electronically or by regular postal mail.
Offering residents a choice between receiving daycare bills andbulk mailings either electronically or by regular postal mail enablesmunicipalities to raise the level of service. Down the road, these localgovernments wil l also enjoy pared distribution costs, says MargaretaChowra, product manager for ePostboxen, Posten.
As of this writing, the ePostboxen delivery option will be available to residents in the following areas: Arvidsjaur, Bollnas, Eksjo, Gislaved, Gallivare, Habo, Hudiksvall, Hultsfred, Hogsby, Kramfors, Ljusdal, Norrkoping, Nassjo, Ovanaker, Pajala, Solleftea, Tranas, Uppsala, Vaggeryd, Vilhelmina, Vindeln, and Ostersund.

French La Poste and Swedish Posten AB companies will jointly develop the Polish courier company Masterlink Express

In line with the agreement signed in July, La Poste Group took over a 50-percent stake in Masterlink Express from Posten AB, its to-date sole shareholder. At the same time, Posten AB bought a license for Polish operations from Direct Parcel Distribution, one of the largest logistics groups in Europe. As a result, Masterlink will gain access to the chain covering 24 European countries.
Thanks to the change in the ownership structure, Masterlink will become part of Europe’s second-largest logistics group. As a member of the large multinational chain, Masterlink will be able to transfer know-how and improve its service line.
