Sweden Post announces agreement to divest parcel delivery and logistics operations in Baltic rim, Poland and Russia

Sweden Post today announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its Baltic-, Poland- and Russia-based parcel delivery and logistics business operations to Geopost, a wholly owned subsidiary of La Poste. Posten AB partly owns the parcel delivery and logistics companies in Poland and Russia and wholly owns the Baltic businesses. The transaction, a consequence of the new board-sanctioned strategy, will positively affect Sweden Post’s net income and cash flows.

Posten Sweden on track to leaner organization

Posten AB, announced yesterday that it has agreed to sell the operations of Swedgiro AB. Swedgiro AB, the wholly owned subsidiary of Posten, Sweden’s national postal service organization, operates in Poland and the Baltic rim countries. The business operations in Poland will be taken over by the company’s management team. The business operations in the Baltic rim countries will be taken over by Finland’s national postal service organization. Swedgiro provides combinations of conventional and electronic mail services. Posten will realize a capital gain on the transaction.

Posten not out of the woods

A boost in operating earnings has not allayed fears over a ‘major negative cashflow situation’ the head of the Swedish postal company has warned.

Eric Olssen, CEO of Posten, said the post would forge ahead with its restructuring, encouraged by the adjusted operating earnings for the first three quarters of 2003 of SKr-147 million, a SKr278 million increase compared to last year. The company said the improvement was primarily attributable to rate adjustments made at year-end 2002.

Orange hand points the way to postal voting stations in Sweden

In conjunction with the referendum on whether Sweden will adopt the euro, Posten is offering postal voting at more than 1,500 voting stations across the country between August 27 and September 14. Posten has handled early voting since 1942. Postal voting has accounted for roughly one-third of the ballots cast in the previous four elections. Like the 2002 general elections, the orange hand symbol will be visibly displayed at all postal voting stations.
