DHL opens terminal at Slovenian airport

The Slovenian branch of global logistics firm DHL opened a terminal at the Joze Pucnik Ljubljana Airport that will serve as the base for the company’s operations in Slovenia.

DHL Express Slovenija set up its base in the new US$4.25 million terminal owned by airport operator Aerodrom Ljubljana and construction firm GH Holding. The building is the first in a series that will form the new business and logistics zone at the airport, dubbed Airport City.

DHL Express Slovenija, the subsidiary of German group DHL, will combine its two core operations in Slovenia – sorting of express parcels and collection of freight parcels.

DHL Express Slovenija commanded nearly 60 percent of the Slovenian market in express postal services. He said the company expected the market to continue growing at a healthy pace.

In order to cater for the growing demand, the company intends to begin using a Boeing 757 cargo plane to service the terminal in Ljubljana, significantly increasing capacity. With this the terminal will also become DHL’s hub for the Austrian region of Carinthia, parts of Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Croatia.

The airport operator wanted to turn Joze Pucnik Airport into a logistics and business hub connecting road, air and railway transport. Talks were underway on connecting the airport to the railway system.

Slovenia: Postal Company Posts Best Results Ever

The boss of Posta Slovenije told the press on Friday the national postal company generated EUR 20.88 million in net profit in 2006, or some EUR 5.8 million more than a year before. Operating revenues increased nearly 10 per cent to EUR 229.78 million.

The results have never been better, Ales Hauc told the press in Ljubljana, upbeat about the future of the company that employed 6,723 people at the end of 2006.

The general manager said the figures were particularly good considering that 75 per cent of revenues were generated in sectors that were not under state control. According to him, Posta Slovenije has long ceased to be a monopoly.

Good operating results are attributable to 12-per-cent growth in services, productivity, efficient cost management and streamlined operations. The bulk of revenues was made in standard mail services (42 per cent), direct mail delivery (16 per cent) and cash transactions (23 per cent), followed by retail (6 per cent) and parcel delivery (8 per cent).

The projection for this year is an 8-per-cent increase in revenues and 5-per-cent growth in expenditures and a drop in profit as growth is expected to slow down compared to trends over the past few years.

According to Hauc, the postal company has always been conservative in its operating plans. Investment totalled EUR 12.8 million last year, and was spent mainly on new buildings and furnishings, means of transport, capital investments and IT. This year the company is to invest a total of EUR 37.69 million.

Posta Slovenije expanding ties with postal companies in region

The management of the national postal company signed a letter of intent on business cooperation with its Macedonian counterpart on Friday, 6 April in what could be a prelude to a tie-up. This is the fourth such agreement Posta Slovenije signed with akin companies in the region.

Following the signing in Maribor, where Posta Slovenije is based, its director general Ales Hauc said the agreement would improve the terms for the exchange of mail, something that would enable both sides to offer competitive solutions to their clients. Posta Slovenije counts mainly on Slovenian companies in Macedonia.

According to Hauc, the company will conduct due diligence in the Macedonian post in order to examine its capacities and options to further enhance cooperation. The official would not rule out the option of a tie-up, a decision that would have to be taken by the governments as both postal companies are 100% state owned.

Decisions on further steps are expected to be taken by the end of August, that is only after Posta Slovenije has pored over the books of the Macedonian company, the director general of Posta Slovenije told the press.

His Macedonian counterpart Sadula Izairi said his company hoped to benefit from Slovenian experience in investment in postal network and integration into the EU. The Macedonian post became a joint stock company about two months ago. It employs 2,400 people in 351 postal offices across the country. According to Izairi, the company has good potential for development, good management and additional investment provided.

The signed agreement is the fourth such document after Posta Slovenija agreed cooperation with the national postal companies in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania. “Our goal is to simplify cooperation among postal offices in the region, which will eventually become part of the EU anyway,” the head of the Slovenian company said.

According to him, the plan is for the postal managements from what used to be a common country to agree special terms of cooperation, that should be in line with European and international standards though. Hauc said Posta Slovenije was currently not considering any new letter of intent.
