United States to chair UPU Postal Operations Council

James P Wade, Vice-President International Business and the United States Postal Service was elected Chairman of the Postal Operations Council (POC) during the 23rd Universal Postal Congress in Bucharest, Romania. Wade is the former Chairman of the Direct Mail Advisory Board (DMAB), a position that Brazil will take over. Kenya has been elected Vice-Chair of the POC. As the Congress host country, Romania has automatically taken over Chairmanship of the UPU Council of Administraton (CA). Algeria, Italy, Pakistan and Trinidad & Tobago have been elected Vice-Chairman of the CA.

Independent Pilots Association Still Waiting for UPS to Deliver Counter Proposals after Second Round of Mediated Talks

The Independent Pilots Association came into the second round of mediated negotiations expecting counter proposals from United Parcel Service, but as the talks concluded last night the pilots were still waiting for UPS to deliver. “UPS had seven weeks to respond to the detailed scheduling, retirement and compensation proposals we gave them back in August, but they showed up this week empty handed,” said Capt. Tom Nicholson, President of the Independent Pilots Association. He went on to say, “The ball was in UPS’s court and they chose not to play.”

UPS bets logistics business will be growth engine

United Parcel Service Inc. is betting its logistics group will be a major growth engine as it benefits from companies expanding abroad.

The company, known for its brown uniforms and trucks, has been expanding beyond its package delivery roots into logistics, using its network to help shippers navigate customs, manage traffic flows, reduce inventory to free up cash, warehouse parts and revamp distribution networks.

“More customers are global or global sourcing,” said Bob Stoffel, senior vice president of UPS Supply Chain Group, at a recent press briefing. “They want someone to manage it (the traffic).”

The company’s logistics business, which has grown to USD2.1 billion, or about 6 percent of total UPS revenue, is one of three prongs in the UPS growth strategy, Chief Executive Michael Eskew said at the briefing.

FedEx selects Opsware to automate global data center operations

Opsware Inc, the leading provider of IT automation and utility computing software, have announced that FedEx Corporate Services, Inc., a subsidiary of FedEx Corp, has selected the Opsware System.

One of the key strategic elements for IT in 2004 is speed to market. As part of this strategy, FedEx selected the Opsware System to help the company optimize IT resource allocation to meet key business objectives. FedEx will use the Opsware System to establish a consistent baseline across their server and application infrastructure, an important foundation for realizing speed and future utility computing initiatives.

Deutsche Post sees US ops FY loss widening; delays US breakeven target

Deutsche Post World Net AG said it will incur additional spending this year for its US operations, which will result in the expected loss there widening to as much as 500 mln eur from the initially planned 300 mln. It said the additional spending will shift the breakeven target for its US operations to 2006 from 2005. It said the expected loss in 2005 will be as much as 300 mln eur. The group’s earnings targets for 2004 and 2005 however are not impacted by the altered US timetable, it said. For 2004, the company expects an increase in EBITA of 7.5-12.5 pct year-on-year and 2005 EBITA of at least 3.6 bln eur. It said some 200 mln eur in additional expenses in 2004 will be covered by ‘good operating results’ in other regions, especially Asia and segments such as logistics.
