VNPT's Post, telco arms to branch out as two enterprises

Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corp (VNPT) is rolling with the punches as it gears up for competitive pressure and a bold restructure.
The State-owned giant will operate as two entirely separate corporations by 2003.
The historic split will kick off at the district-level post network.
Trials began in 11 cities and provinces last year, and will be completed in the rest of the country by mid-August this year.
The corporation has finished 40 per cent of its full-year plan, contributing more than VND1.4 trillion (US$90 million) to the State budget, an increase of 6 per cent compared to the first half of last year.

Vietnam's Postal Sector to Open to Competition

All economic sectors will have access to telecom services when a new post and telecommunications ordinance takes effect in early October of this year. The ordinance stipulates that the state establish its own enterprise called ‘Vietnam Post’ to supply public postal services or mainly exercise its public duty. Meanwhile, businesses of other economic sectors are entitled to take part in postal services as postal service and mail delivery agents.

Vietnam to Split Post and Telecom

From July 1, Vietnam would divide the post and telecoms sector into two separate groups, following a trial in 11 provinces. The plan will improve the quality of telecoms services and reduce fees. Currently, revenues from telecoms services are being used to subsidize postal services.

Vietnamese Ordinance on Posts & Telecommunications passed

Vietnam’s National Assembly Standing Committee has approved the eight-chapter Ordinance on Posts & Telecommunications, the highest legal document governing the industry, according to the Department General of Posts & Telecommunications.
For posts, a sole state-run postal company will be founded to supply public postal services, and enterprises from all economic sectors are permitted to provide delivery services.

Hanoi Post Office launches ISDN internet service

The Post Office in Vietnam on May 15 officially offered a service called 1267-ISDN that allows users to access the Internet via the Integrated Services Digital Network with high data transmission speeds.
The service also enables the use of hi-tech equipment such as video phones, faxes and personal computers.
