DHL Express breaks ground on €10m sorting centre in Freiburg

DHL Express has begun construction on a new EUR 10m sorting facility in Freiburg, in the south-west of Germany. The company held a cornerstone ceremony yesterday for the facility in the Herbolzheim industrial park.

Once complete, it will offer 14,500 square metres of operational area and 3,000 square metres of office space.

DHL Express said it will relocate its existing facility in Lahr to the new site in the autumn of 2015. The new site has close links to the A5 autobahn, providing a direct connection to DHL’s international transport network.

About 75 employees will be based at the new sorting centre.

The company has seen its shipment volumes in the region grow by around 7% over the past two years.

The new centre should almost triple production capacity, catering for the next 15 years of predicted growth. It will be capable of loading and unloading 40 vehicles at the same time, handling around 2,400 pieces per hour.

Wolfgang Albeck, group president of DHL Express Germany, said: “Considering the continuous volume growth in this region, this expansion has become imperative.”

“Compared to the old location, thanks to these operational changes we will achieve a shorter processing time for shipment, and as a result significantly improve service for our customers.”
