Uber fined $7.3m for non-compliance with California regulations

Uber’s subsidiary Raiser-CA has been fined $7.3m for failing to give California state regulators information about its business practices. The fine was handed down on Wednesday (15 July) as part of a ruling by an administrative law judge at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Raiser-CA operates Uber’s budget service, UberX.

The company now must either pay up, appeal within 30 days, or cease operations in the state of California.

Raiser did provide much of the information requested by the regulator – but not enough, according to the judge and the CPUC. The company did not, for example, hand over all data on the numbers of customers requesting accessible vehicles (for instance, those who were accompanied by guide dogs or needed wheelchair-accessible vehicles). It also didn’t share its ability to comply with these requests, according to the CPUC, and nor did it provide full information on driver incidents and insurance payments for accidents.

Uber has told US media that it will appeal against the ruling.
