Royal Mail to close distribution centre in UK

A royal Mail regional distribution centre is to close next week as part of a major review of the company’s transport networks.

The South Devon and Cornwall Service Centre on the Langage Industrial Estate will close on December 8, following the announcement of its fate in March.

Work currently undertaken there will be transferred to a purpose-built site in Bristol but the change will not impact on day-to-day mail services in the city as the operation is entirely separate to Plymouth’s mail centre in Plymstock.

The closing centre currently provides a storing and distribution service for significant mailings by some of Royal Mail’s biggest customers. The company’s drivers will continue to collect by arrangement and customers have been informed. The 20 staff based at the closing site have been offered alternative jobs within the firm elsewhere in the city and a few have chosen voluntary redundancy.

Distribution manager South West, Ray Young, said staff’s individual circumstances had been taken into consideration. “We have managed to find a job for all those that said they wanted to stay with Royal Mail,” he said.
