Austrian Post: The performance of our new logistics centre is enormous
Austrian Post‘s newly built parcel logistics centre in Vienna-Inzersdorf is ramping up for Peak.
In March of last year, the ground-breaking ceremony for Austrian Post’s most innovative parcel logistics centre was held in Vienna-Inzersdorf. On an area of more than 22,000 m², three different sorting machines in a hybrid model are now going into operation for the first time in order to provide full capacity in time for the peak season before Christmas. “The performance of our new logistics centre is enormous. On the very first day of operation, we rerouted all parcels from the old logistics centre in one fell swoop, processing up to 7,000 shipments per hour. By the peak season, we will be ramping up capacity and processing over 250,000 parcels per day,” says Peter Umundum, Director of the Board of Management for Parcel & Logistics, Austrian Post. In the first stage of expansion, the new parcel logistics centre will be able to call up a capacity of up to 25,500 parcels per hour, which is more than double the previous sorting capacity at the Vienna-Inzersdorf site. For the first time, an innovative hybrid model is being used, in which three different sorting machines are used depending on the size of the packages: one cross-belt sorter handles up to 15,000 parcels per hour, while a further 9,000 parcels per hour run through its own small parts sorter, which sorts smaller parcels with a maximum weight of five kilograms. Further specialization is achieved by a bulky goods sorter, which automatically sorts up to 1,500 particularly large and bulky parcels per hour. The employees are supported by two modern AutoUnloaders, which are intelligent, automatic parcel unloading systems that take over the unloading of swap bodies (WAB). This means that up to 6,000 parcels can be unloaded completely automatically per hour. At the moment, finalization work is still taking place in the outdoor area, including the preparation of the green areas as well as the installation of nesting boxes and the settlement of wild bees. The roof of the new parcel logistics centre will be greened and will be equipped with a photovoltaic system with an output of almost two megawatts peak (MWp). The ceremonial opening of the new building is planned for April 2024. The construction of the new parcel logistics centre will secure more than 1,500 existing jobs at the site and create more than 100 new jobs. Austrian Post currently has vacancies in the areas of sorting, electrics and administration. Truck drivers are also being sought, and Austrian Post will cover the costs of training and driving licences.
