UPS drops Asian LCL venture

United Parcel Service’s (UPS) less-than-container-load service for Asia-US shipments Gemini Shippers Association – ceased operating at the end of last month, according to spokesmen. (10/15/2001)

The venture was UPS’ first attempt to enter this market, having begun in the middle of last year. It was operated by UPS Customshouse Brokerage, Gemini, P&O Nedlloyd, Trans-Pacific Line and United States Consolidation to offer an LCL service for apparel and fashion accessories. Poor volumes, however, were exacerbated when UPS acquired Fritz Cos., which came complete with its own ocean LCL service.

“We appreciate the opportunities afforded us with our prior partnership with UPS. However, we believe both organizations are best served in moving in different directions in order to accommodate our future needs,” said a spokesperson.
