DHL AND EVERGREEN AIR CARGO ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
DHL World Express announced yesterday a partnership with Taiwan’s Evergreen Air Cargo Services Corporation (EGAC), which will soon provide the international express courier with air-side facilities in EGAC’s cargo terminal at CKS international airport.
The deal is part of an aggressive US$300 million investment program by DHL to enhance the company’s ground infrastructure so that it can strengthen its parcel handling efficiency in the Asia Pacific region and Taiwan.
“DHL adjusts the balance of its investment portfolio depending on where the demand for business is,” said Asia Pacific CEO Marc Duale.
The company plans to invest US$82 million in an Asian hub in Hong Kong , US$35 million in a Southeast Asia gateway at Singapore’s Changgi Airport and $125 million in Japan.
“Since the slowdown in the world economy the volume of business has softened, but the markets will turn, and with these new investments we hope to be in a good position when it does”, he added.
DHL also has ambitious expansion plans for mainland China where in joint venture with Sino-trans they will expand to 160 offices in 37 cities by the end of 2001 and 60 different cities in the future.
When asked about the possible effect on DHL’s business of the implementation of the three links between Taiwan the mainland, general manager of DHL Taiwan, Rack Leu commented, “The most important thing for us is flexibility. If the three links are implemented we will work more closely with mainland air carriers.” Copyright 1999 China Post. Source: World Reporter (Trade Mark).
