Exel in £60 mln home delivery contract with Ikea

Exel Direct, Exel’s e-fulfilment and home delivery service, will implement a new system for IKEA’s home deliveries to provide the retailer and its customers with a greater degree of delivery accuracy.

IKEA customers will benefit from this new relationship. Exel will deliver from store to door providing customers the choice at time of ordering, the most convenient time slots for delivery on a given day and which room deliveries should be left.

The new Exel system includes the latest touch screen technology to input delivery details at store. Exel will then use its EDAS system to scan via bar code, all items presented for delivery, these scanned products can then be traced from store, through despatch, transportation and final receipt. On arriving at their final destination, items will be scanned to ensure orders are correctly received and the customers’ signature will be electronically captured as proof of delivery.

Commenting on the decision to appoint Exel, Iain Mackie, Business Services Manager, IKEA said “Exel has a proven record within the retail sector and we are confident of their ability to increase efficiency of our home delivery service to our customers. The logistics provider has the support of the latest technology to help ensure our customers receive the correct deliveries within the right time slots.”

Stewart Oades, President Retail Worldwide with Exel added “IKEA UK, as one of the world’s leading furniture retailers, required a high performance, home delivery service to match. We have been able to offer that by building on our past experience of home delivery through Exel Direct and utilising the latest in retail technology to ensure efficiency for the client and its customers
