Russian Post improves delivery times in Moscow through decentralisation drive
Russian Post has said efforts to improve its logistics system in the Moscow area are beginning to pay off – thanks to the decentralisation of processing activity. The company said new government statistics state that more than 80% of written correspondence from the Moscow region was delivered within three days during the the fourth quarter, for the first time in five years.
The improvement is a doubling of the amount of letters delivered on time in the third quarter, and a five-fold improvement on the second quarter, the Post said.
The figures also suggest that 94.68% of letters in the Moscow region were delivered within five days.
Russian Post said improving the quality of postal services in the capital and surrounding area was one of its key priorities in the past year.
Since July, local mail in the city and the region have been sorted by regional facilities, rather than being taken to the centralised national sorting centre in Podolsk, south of Moscow.
From September, the capital region also began a trial using special red letterboxes for letters being delivered locally, while from October the company made use of the seasonal increase in revenue to solve staff shortages in certain quarters.
Nikolai Nikiforov, the head of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Communications, said: “Achieving such a quick result is a good example of how decentralizing mail flows in the delivery of letters can have a great optimising impact at Russian Post.”
“Now the company is transforming its logistics throughout Russia, and we can expect an improvement in delivery times across the country – not only with respect to domestic letters and parcels, but also those from abroad.”
Nikiforov said his government had set ambitious goals for itself, including by 2018 to cut delivery times to just one day for items delivered within local regions, and to within three days for items delivered between Russian cities, and within five days for items being delivered between any populated area in Russia.
