UK shoppers switching onto US online stores

UK consumers are increasingly looking for “unique and better value shopping” on US-based online stores, according to a new survey from GoSend. Brits are shunning UK retailers and choosing to spend their well earned cash on bargains achieved by looking further afield, with US retailers cashing in on a fifth of all purchases made from Britain, international shipping and shopping service,” claimed GoSend.

“Keen to discover a bigger range of items, a huge 63% are heading to US retailers to buy something they cannot get over here and over a quarter have found items are cheaper than UK retailers.”

The survey also looked at the kind of items that UK online shoppers were most keen to buy on US websites and found that the top four were:

  1. Women’s clothes (36%)
  2. Unique gifts (26%)
  3. Men’s clothes (25%)
  4. American food (16%).

However, the survey also found that “almost all shoppers (97%) said that at some point in their US shopping experience they’ve had reason to abandon their basket at the checkout, with the top bugbear being the total price was too expensive (51%) and if delivery was going to take too long (19%)”.

The “abandoned cart syndrome” is a problem that tends to feature on almost every online shopping survey – and the problem is all the more acute with cross border e-commerce.
