Instacart and Giant Food team up for Washington DC delivery service
Instacart has teamed up with Giant Food for grocery deliveries in Washington DC. “Giant delivery by Instacart” was officially launched yesterday (15 March) and is available to all zip codes throughout Washington, D.C. from Giant’s participating O St. Market and Cathedral Commons locations.
“We are excited to partner with Instacart and expand our convenient delivery options for Washington D.C. customers,” said Gordon Reid, the President of Giant Food.
“Our goal is to help our customers save money, save time and eat well and this unique pilot gives our customers the ability to shop where, when, and how they want, using Instacart in addition to our convenient Giant store locations and Peapod delivery and pick-up services.”
Sources report that Giant Food sees the Instacart deal as a way offering an express option alongside the service already provided by its sister company Peapod. Instacart aims to make deliveries in one hour or less.
In a statement issued yesterday, Instacart said it “will continue to expand in the D.C. market and will soon have more local retailers on the platform”. As previously reported, Instacart has recently “deepened” its relationship with the retailer Whole Foods.
Giant Food, which operates 169 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, is a member of the international retail group Ahold, which yesterday announced that the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) has approved its intended merger with Delhaize. Ahold and Delhaize first published their intention to merge in June 2015. If the merger goes ahead it will create a international retail network of more than 6,500 stores in Europe and the US.
