Nigerian NiPost installs bomb detectors at mail processing centre

Worried by the activities of terrorists across the world, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), has installed bomb detectors/screening machines at the International Mail Processing Centre, Ikeja, Lagos, to screen all letters coming into the country.

NiPosts spokesperson Hussiana Charity Ato stated this in Abuja on Monday when she spoke on the topic: The post, always within your reach and yet efficient to mark the 24th anniversary of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU).

NiPost, in the wake of the October 19, 1986 killing through bomb of the founding editor of Newswatch magazine, Dele Giwa, had installed close television circuit and other metal detectors at its processing centre at the Apapa Ports.

The latest development, Ato said, was to ensure that mails entering the country were adequately screened to forestall any ugly incident.

Ato also spoke on plans by her organisation to improve quality of service in the face of growing evolution of other means of communications.

According to her, the fleet of mail delivery vans would be increased, in addition to purchase of more motorcycles to enhance speedy delivery of letters.

The purpose of these measures aside the refurbish-ment of existing vehicles, she said, was to meet the target set by Federal Government for 48 hours mail delivery.

She said âEœmanagement had concluded plans to equip post offices with modern tools such as stamp cancelling machines, date stamps, among others, to facilitate handling and processing of mails.

Ato stressed that the numerous steps taken since 2000 by NIPOST to revitalise the postal industry had resulted in more than 80 per cent success in 72 hours mail delivery of inter-state letters.

Also, NIPOST over the past few years, she said, had achieved 90 per cent success in 48 hour delivery of intra-state letters posted from one town to another within the same state.

Intra-city letters, are now delivered within 24 hours, Ato said pointing out that handling of mail had achieved 90 per cent security.

PAPU had list year sponsored the launch of the sub regional Road network for mail circulation in ECOWAS countries, apparently modeled after NIPOST National Mail Route Network.
