Electric delivery vans an operationally competitive and carbon friendly alternative for London
A 2.5-year trial has successfully shown the benefits of Voltia electric delivery vans in London.
From July 2017-December 2019 the Mayor of London tested a set of innovative new vans that will be added to their existing fleet of fully electric vehicles (EVs) in order to contribute to reducing air pollution.
The trial vans’ emissions performance was tested against comparable diesel delivery vans. The pilot project concluded that, in terms of operational performance, cost, vehicle emissions and impact on the grid, cargo EVs offer an operationally competitive and environmentally friendly fleet alternative to diesel vans.
Voltia vans used significantly less energy per km than the diesels and small EVs and compared favourably with the small EVs in terms of distance travelled and productivity.
Commercial freight vehicles represent 30% of all traffic in central London and make an estimated 281,000 journeys per day. To address this, the Mayor’s Office teamed up with Gnewt, Voltia’s UK partner, to test the performance of electric delivery vans in central London without further contributing to the air pollution problem.
State-of-the-art vehicles consisting of Nissan Voltia eNV200s (first generation with 24kWh battery; Nissan Vic-Young modified eNV200s and BD Auto eDucato’s were tested against comparable diesel delivery vans on the environmental emissions performance, range, energy consumed and more. Altogether, there were 26 trial vehicles in the mentioned project.
