Shanghai Sets Up Supervision Center for Express Parcels

SHANGHAI, Aug 15, 2001 (Xinhua via COMTEX) — The Shanghai Customs has set up
China’s largest supervision center for international air express parcels, said
a customs officer here. The supervision center, at Pudong International Airport, a pivotal entry and
exit point for international travelers to Shanghai, processes 7,500 express
parcels per hour, said Lu Peijun, director of the Shanghai Customs. Express parcel services are playing an increasingly important role in the
global logistics industry, said Lu, adding that the supervision center will
facilitate customs clearance of inbound and outbound express parcels and meet
international standards in the logistics service sector. According to Lu, the supervision center will improve efficiency in customs
supervision and express parcel clearance through its “one-stop” services
ranging from customs clearance to quarantine and safety inspection. Statistics show that China’s air express market reports an annual turnover of
over 10 billion yuan (about 1.2 billion U.S. dollars), and is still expanding
at 30 percent year-on-year. Copyright 2001 XINHUA NEWS AGENCY -0-XINHUA NEWS AGENCY, 14th August 2001
